Leslie Charteris
A los diecisiete años, vendió su primer cuento, y el año siguiente, en contra de su voluntad le enviaron a la Universidad de Cambridge.
Leslie Charteris, el creador de El Santo, se llamaba realmente Leslie Charles Bowyer Yin; nació en Singapur el 12 de Mayo de 1907, y cambió su nombre en 1926. Su padre era un médico chino, y su madre era inglesa.
Antes de aprender el inglés, aprendió el chino y el malayo de boca de sus criados indígenas. Antes de cumplir los doce años, había recorrido el mundo tres veces, en compañía de sus padres. Fue entonces cuando sus padres decidieron ingresarle en un colegio, para perfeccionar su educación, pero Leslie era ya "perro viejo", y poco le quedaba por aprender.
Comenzó a escribir de crío. A los diez años había escrito y "publicado" una pequeña revista, y mediante un astuto "chantaje", obligó a sus padres a suscribirse a ella. Era una buena pieza, este Leslie.
En esta época se apasiona por todo lo referente al crimen, y lee todo lo que cae en sus manos, que pueda estar relacionado con el delito. Según comentó posteriormente, se consideraba con inteligencia suficiente como para acometer cualquier empresa delictiva sin riesgo. El caso es que con tanta lectura, le entró de nuevo el gusanillo de escribir.En definitiva, nos encontramos ante otro de esos elementos que, al igual que E.R.Burroughs o Lester Dent, poseen una notable inquietud, y ciertas aventureras cualidades de trotamundos.
Tras su primer año de facultad, Leslie había vendido cierto número de novelas policiacas a finales de los años 20 (una de las cuales fue 'Meet the Tiger' en 1928, la primera novela de El Santo) y tuvo el suficiente éxito como para replantearse sus estudios. Los dejó para poder escribir, con el consiguiente disgusto de su familia. Su padre, que debía ser de armas tomar le dijo que no pensaba darle un duro, y que se las apañara por sí mismo.
Leslie regresó a Malasia y trabajó en las plantaciones de Caucho, en una mina de estaño y en una destilería ed alcohol de madera. Buscó oro en la selva y extrajo perlas de los fondos marinos. Se hizo marinero en un barco de carga, recorrió toda Inglaterra con una compañía Teatral, ejerció de camarero y fue jugador profesional de bridge.
En 1932 las cosas le iban bastante mejor, de modo que se casó, se hizo aviador, y tuvo una hija (por ese orden). Luego pasó por España y se hizo un forofo de los toros.
Ese mismo año comienza su gran aventura americana: llega allí prácticamente con lo puesto, y siendo un desconocido.
En un año había hecho su primera película, y poco después se divorció de Pauline (su primera esposa), se compró una enorme casa de campo, y se volvió a casar (con Barbara Meyer). Para entonces, el personaje de El Santo arrasaba en EE.UU.
En el momento de su muerte, en Abril de 1993, Charteris había escrito casi 100 aventuras originales del Santo, además de incontables recopilaciones y antologías...
