Las aventuras en Oriente Medio
Ahora si que llegamos a la fanfarria oriental propiamente dicha: malvados asesinos turcos armados de curvas dagas, mercados repletos de exóticas mercancías, exuberantes jardines y palacios, ciudades perdidas en pleno desierto, magia antigua, conocimientos arcaicos, combates a cimitarra, mujeres hermosas envueltas en gasa y joyas...
Es un tipo de ambientación tan sugerente, que pocos la dejarían escapar. Hablaremos ahora de algunos autores de pulps que abordaron estos ambientes en sus obras, de diferentes maneras.
Jack Williamson:
John Stewart Williamson, (1909, ), autor emblemático de los pulps, desarrolló su trabajo, principalmente en el campo de la ciencia ficción, pasando a la historia de ese género como una de sus principales figuras clásicas. Algunas de sus obras, como "La legión del espacio", se cuentan entre los clásicos de la CF, entre otras de Bradbury, Cummings, Hamilton o Clarke. Sin embargo, el joven Jack comenzó practicando gran cantidad de géneros. En la mítica Weird Tales, un primerizo Jack Williamson desarrolló una novela por entregas que se ha convertido en una de las obras de referencia fundamentales en cuanto a aventuras exóticas y razas perdidas: nos referimos a Sangre dorada (1932).
Williamson concibió Sangre dorada como una especie de homenaje a E. Hoffman Price, autor al que Jack conocía y admiraba, no sólo por su calidad literaria, sino por su plena vida aventurera. No en vano, el protagonista de la novela se llama Price (Durand). Era una especie de alter-ego del personaje decidido y trotamundesco que Williamson veía en E. Hoffman Price. Sangre Dorada narraba la búsqueda de la mítica ciudad perdida de Anz, oculta en lo más profundo del desierto. Ciudad temida y semi-maldita, pero famosa por su riqueza y su color dorado.
Durand, ni corto ni perezoso, no se aventura a dichas tierras con un simple camello y una cantimplora, sino que trae consigo un verdadero ejército de mercenarios (muchos de los cuales le darán bastantes problemas) y...¡hasta un tanque!.
Con muchas influencias de la saga de Ella-Ayesha, la novela de Williamson se bebe y se disfruta. Price conocerá a una hermosa joven llamada Aysa (nótese la semejanza con Ayesha) de la que, evidentemente, se enamorará. Los malos son, además de los propios socios de Price, la malvada pareja que gobierna Anz desde hace siglos: Vekyra y Malikar, unos poderosísimos seres inmortales -merced a ciertos vapores emanados en las cavernas de Anz (otra referencia a Ella), que además han dejado a su piel un extraño tono dorado. Vekyra se enamora de Price -ya está hasta el gorro de Malik- y desea otorgarle la inmortalidad, y Malik intentará lo mismo con Aysa. Y para colmo, los saqueadores ex-socios de Durand aparecen dando guerra. Un clásico entrañable que os recomiendo encarecidamente, ya que no es difícil de encontrar, gracias al señor J.M. Lalanda, que la publicó hace pocos años en la colección Ultima Thule, de Anaya. Clark Ashton Smith:
Ya hemos hablado de él, largo y tendido, en su capítulo correspondiente. No obstante, cuando se comenta la trayectoria literaria de Smith, suele prestarse especial atención a sus "Mundos Perdidos": Zotique, Averoigne... y obviar el tema oriental, tema que fascinaba personalmente a Smith, hasta extremos de traducir textos o terminar relatos, por el solo placer de tenerlos para su propio disfrute. Las traducciones de Smith de la obra de Flaubert y Baudelaire son famosas por su calidad, pero suele obviarse que las realizó por puro gusto. Lo mismo ocurre con el episodio inacabado del Vathek de Beckford, que Smith completó, no por motivos pecuniarios, sino por el puro placer de hacerlo. Y es que, si nos ponemos a contar todos los relatos de ambiente oriental que Clark Ashton Smith realizó, nos daremos cuenta de que fácilmente podemos formar un ciclo entero con todos ellos, al igual que se hace a menudo con Hyperborea, Atlantis, Zotique...
De todos esos relatos, de los cuales se habla a menudo como una obra sin importancia, tapados por sus relatos de terror y de mundos perdidos, sólo uno, que yo sepa, ha sido traducido al español: "La raiz de Ampoi", que se incluye de un modo un tanto aleatorio en "Los Mundos Perdidos" de Edaf. Y a los demás ¿qué les pasa? ¿Acaso no son lo bastante buenos? De ninguna manera.
De modo que, harto de esta ilógica omisión editorial, me he echado la manta a la cabeza y me he puesto a traducir algunos de ellos, a ver qué pasaba. En este mismo capítulo os ofrezco dos pequeñas muestras: "El Ghoul" y "El beso de Zoraida". Edgard Hoffman Price:
La mayoría de los relatos de Price hacen gala de una marcada filosofía oriental. La única excepción parecían ser los western (como veis, tocó todos los temas).
Otro del que, imperdonablemente, no habíamos hablado aún. No obstante, este es, sin duda, el artículo en el que su presencia es más natural. Personaje de novela, Price, nacido en California, perteneció a la caballería, se graduó en West Point y se batió en Filipinas, México y Francia. Era un orientalista entusiasta, estudiaba árabe, esgrima, coleccionaba alfombras persas...Price comenzó su carrera en los pulps en 1924, con la venta de su primer relato a Droll Stories. A comienzos de los 30, su principal fuente de ingresos era ya, Weird Tales, pero sin ningún miedo, se lanzó al mercado de los pulps detectivescos.
La mayoría del trabajo de Price se publicó en los llamados "Spicy" pulps. Escribió unas 150 historias para dichos pulps desde mediados de los 30 a mediados de los 40.
Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Price contribuyó con relatos bélicos para revistas de aventuras como Argosy, Adventure, y Short Stories, además de todo tipo de relatos.
Tras la caída del mercado de pulps a finales de los 50, Price escribió las columnas de astrología para los periódicos de San Francisco. Esta parece haber sido su principal fuente de recursos durante los siguientes 20 años.
A finales de los 70, comenzó a escribir novelas. La primera fue Grubstake, un western que revisaba y expandía un relato del mismo título, y que le fue publicado por Zebra books. Se animó y publicó dos novelas de fantasía, The Devil-Wives of Li Fong y The Jade Enchantress, y una recopilación en cuatro tomos de sus relatos de ciencia ficción.
A Price, además, le gustaba escribir acerca de sus compañeros de los pulps. Publicó muchos artículos sobre ellos en fanzines, así como artículos sobre cómo escribir para las revistas de pulps.
Pero si en algo despuntó Price en su prolífica carrera literaria, fue en sus cuentos orientales, de los cuales escribió un gran número, no sólo para Weird Tales, sino tambien para Adventure, Oriental Stories y su continuadora Magic Carpet...Su bibliografía es tan desmesurada, que no nos hemos atrevido con toda ella, y hemos suprimido todos sus relatos de westerns y policiacos. Al igual que en el caso de Klarkastón, el señor Howard tiene un capítulo para él solito. No obstante, en él, hablamos sólo muy ligeramente de sus relatos de ambiente oriental, que son muchos y muy buenos. El sentido de la aventura que trasluce la obra del señor Howard, no tiene, a mi juicio, competidor alguno, ni nadie que pueda hacerle sombra.
Básicamente, Howard tiene tres tipos de aventura oriental:El primer tipo, en ocasiones, en clave de comedia, estaría protagonizado por sus dos marineros/boxeadores: Dennis Dorgan y Steve Costigan (que, en teoría, no es el mismo de Skull-Face). Tanto Dorgan como Costigan son dos camorristas que se meten en unos berenjenales increíbles. Aflora en estos relatos el peculiar sentido del humor de Howard, absolutamente bestia, y el curioso binomio de la fascinación por las tierras orientales, junto con la desconfianza por sus habitantes.

"Winner Take All"El segundo tipo de aventura oriental howardiana, presenta aventureros norteamericanos, muy en la línea de Lawrence de Arabia, o de Gordon de Karthum. Son personajes de tipo céltico -como no- que se han desplazado a tierras exóticas, conviviendo con sus habitantes -en contraposición al "paletismo" de sus personajes marineros- y conociendo al dedillo las costumbres, topografía y tradiciones nativas. Son relatos mucho más serios, en los que hay cabida para elementos terroríficos y fantásticos, descubrimiento de ciudades perdidas, e incluso, elementos sobrenaturales. En este tipo de aventuras podemos citar dos standards: Francis Xavier Gordon "El Borak", y Kirby O'Donnell, además de dos curiosas excepciones: Lal Singh (un nativo) y Steve Clarney, que protagoniza un solo relato, con reminiscencias de los Mitos de Chtulhu.

En estas historias, Howard elige un lugar concreto y un episodio concreto de la historia de la humanidad, para desarrollar la narración: el asedio a Viena por los turcos, el paso de los cruzados por tierras arabes...
