BATTLE MATS

(Pulse aquí para ver esta página en español)

This is an short article to create battlemats for Dungeons, or any other game with an important strategic component.

It is a very easy process which uses easy to find and cheap materials, thus the maps are quite easy to create. On the other hand, once the maps are finished they are very easy to use, and very helpful to draw the combat scenarios and place the miniatures over it.

Note: click any picture if you want a bigger image.

First, get a few sheets with the grid you want to use. For example, you can use the grid I uploaded to my website, here: Grid for movement and combat for D&D 3rd. ed. (Word 97).

Then get a few detachable sheets for picture books. The better ones are the ones which keep the pictures on place stuck by electrostatic attraction to the plastic, though you can also use adhesive sheets.

Now place the grid sheets inside the picture book sheets.

Once you have all the templates ready, you just have to put them together to get an standard map. You can make the map as big as you want, just build as many templates as you wish.

You can use pinzers to stick the templates together, this way the whole map will be more steady.

The pinzer in detail, keeping two templates together.

Once you finished the map, get a non-permanent felt-tip pen. Before making big maps on the templates, check if the drawing can be erased easily from the plastic cover of the templates with a paper serviette or similar bit of paper. If this is the case (as it should be) you'll be able to use the battlemat in a very comfy way to draw (and reuse!) the dungeon or wilderness scenarios you need.

      Materials summary:
      Four grid sheets.
      Four detachable picture books sheets.
      Four pinzers.
      A non-permanent felt-tip pen.
