The band's beginnings go back to 1995, when it was formed by the guitarists Luis Ortiz and Carlos Aréchica, the drummer Jorge Perez and the vocalist Marcela Bovio. There wasn't real formality in this project, they played cover songs only and in little occasions there was initiative to improvise.
It was not until October of 1996, when some differences caused the departure of Carlos and Jorge, so in their place arrived guitarist Roberto Quintanilla, who filled the expectatives of the rest of the band. With him, the group began to compose songs of their own and started trying different music styles.
In August of 1997, after playing with several drummers, David Vázquez joined the band, which caused the group's style to be modified once again, this time by progressive influences. A short time later, the bassist Miguel Villarreal also joined in, completing therefore the band's alignment.
In November of the same year, Hydra took part of the UdeM song festival and won with the song 'Insomnio'; this gave them the opportunity to record their first demo en 'Cuarto de Control' in March 1998.
After some time playing live in different festivals and gigs of this sort, guitarist Luis Ortiz leaves Hydra due to musical differences and personal problems with other members of the band. The rest continued experimenting and started looking for a replacement until contacting Ernesto "Lord Griff" Villarreal, Miguel's cousin and Roberto's old friend, who immediately identified himself with the sound and fitted in wonderfully.
With all band members participating actively in the song writing process, the band's style suffered some new (good) changes. At the same time, the band joined forces with Carnavalia , a music festival organized by Mario 'Marakz' Huerta, project that now gave them the opportunity of recording 2 new songs, 'Lluvia de rosas negras' and 'Abaddon', that show a much more mature sense of melody, more sensitivity and give a clear idea of the new band's concept.
During 1999, along with the entrance of keyboard player Alejandro Millán, Hydra wrote and recorded their first demo: Bosquejo (Sketch), with the great help of Reyes Amaro and great collaboration of all the people at the recording studio La Cueva. The new songs expanded once more the band's horizons, blending together a more wide range of emotions and feelings to their music.
On April, 2000, the band participated on the Expo Rock contest, coming in 3rd place and having the opportunity to record 2 new songs: 'Alphard' and 'Camino al Olvido', in Groove Town Records.
Also in April 2000, Hydra's line-up changed drastically, with the departure of Miguel and Ernesto, forcing the band to take some time to define future goals and search for the appropriate replacements. That was how the band got in touch with bass player Carlos Martínez, of great skills and similar music tastes.
Hydra is now solidifying it's sound again, ready to create music from a different point of view, with a wider vision, open to a more different range of influences and styles, yet always giving melody, harmony and lyrics their usual importance.
