Great Force

Meet Porsha Weddington, one of the best power forwards in 5A Region 2 and maybe one of the best in the State. Porsha pounds the boards for the Tem Cats (Temple H.S.) in District 13-5A. She enjoyed a break through season, in 2004-2005, leading her team to a 23-12 record and advanced to the second round of the Texas 5A state tournament.

Porsha led the team with total points scored of 476 (15/gm), and started the season with three consecutive 18-point games.

Tem Cat head coach Don Layton says, "Porscha has great athletic ability and plays a lot bigger than she is.

Porscha can take control of a game and our team looks for her when we need to score."

Coach Layton also said, "We feel that 8 rebounds a game is not enough, and believe that she has the ability to double double every night. With out a doubt, Porscha leads our team by example."

Porscha has great hands and always seems to come up with the ball under the basket. She shoots 52% from the field, and 65% from the line.

Weddington is a great force

inside who can play the four or the five.

We asked Porsha, "what are your hopes for your senior year?"

My hopes are broken into four areas: team, academics, personal and spiritual.

  • My team goals are set high but achievable. I want our team to win the 13-5 A district, and state. I also would like my AAU Team to win the AAU and BCI 17 and under nationals titles. We are returning four starters with four strong teammates that are ready to step-up and meet the challenge. Together, playing as team with solid coaching, we can accomplish all four goals.
  • I want to build a solid foundation finishing strong my senior year, and starting strong with my academic career. I want to graduate with honors in my class building momentum as I enter college.
  • My personal goals surround becoming a well-rounded person that is open-minded, learning to enjoy various cultures and customs.
  • Most important, I want to spend time developing my walk with the Lord. I want to live my life as an example for others to consider Christ.

TGB asked Porsha, "How can you help your team reach its goals?"

  • I lead by example in practice and conditioning drills. I have and will continue to give 110 percent 100 percent of the time. I have been encouraging my teammates to play AAU summer basketball, work out together this summer in the weight room. Six of our returning varsity players have joined the Austin Lady Knights. Together we will play 60 plus games the equivalent of two seasons. I also will continue to play unselfish putting my team goals above my personal goals.

Porsha you are an amazing young lady, where do you get your strength?

First, my main strength comes from being a Christian and having Jesus in my life. Next would be my parents and family, there is an old African saying, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” I can safely say my entire family has helped me athletically, academically and spiritually. I have very strong family ties that have had major influences in my live. We have regular family gathering at holidays and weekends. We have strong successful role modeling in our family: Psychiatrists, accountants, nurses, engineers, lawyers, computer analyst, stockbrokers, teachers, professional athletes, and business executives.

The Tem Cats return eight Varsity players, three of which were starters and 1st team all district players (Shondria Combs, Karyn Johnson and Porscha Weddington).

Coach Layton expects big things from his two returning freshmen (Kaetlyn Murdoch and Trenette Smith). He is also confident that his point guard (Combs) will provide good leadership, and that

center 6'2" Jennifer Reynon will have a

big season.
