In this section there will appear differents works from different bands belonging or not to the Alternative Pop Rock, but which we consider of main importance to understand the pop rock from the 70´s up to nowadays.

R-Z

Sad Lovers And Giants -E-mail From Eternity-

Compilation of this British band close in sound to The Essence and Snakecorps, SLAG are great ambient sad song makers where the guitars and keyboards draw the main lines of their soundscapes. Some songs are re-recorded for the occassion giving more strength to the tunes.

St Germain - Tourist

The alter ego of Ludovic Navarre presents us in the year 2000 his second work after five years of silence. Following the same schemes of the first one, St Germain investigates in the sounds of the electronic jazz and the chill out. Instrumentals compositions with samplers added, give this work an intelectual character. The perfect music to relax at home with a good book in your hands, meanwhile, outside, the afternoon slowly passes by.

Sigur Ros - ( )

The return in 2002 of this amazing band fron Iceland with a work called simply ( ), where the songs, all untitled, surpass the conventional timings and where the melodies evoke cold landscapes of infinite loneliness. The lyrics, as Cocteau Twins did in the 80´s, are based on an invented language where the voice is another instrument which helps to construct this fantastic atmosphere of ingravity and sadness.

Simple Minds -Once Upon A Time-

In 1985 Simple Minds, after being eight years on the musical scene, find the formula to conquer the american market. Strong drums and guitars followed by the epic voice of Mr. Kerr closer than ever to Bono. Far behind are now the dark sounds of the beginnings or even the experiments with the techno-pop. Eight songs with an impressive production whith quality 100%. A work they will be unable to surpass.

The Sisters Of Mercy -Floodland-

In 1987 Andrew Eldritch surprises us with a new re-incarnation of his band. After the leaving of the rest of the members, some of them to form The Mission, Eldritch decides to go on with his project diving in the gothic sound leaving the guitars behind and taking the synths, drum machines and his personal low voice to lead the sound. The only counterpoint in this work is the obsession of Mr. Eldritch for enlarging the songs innecesarily. Basic album if you are a goth fan.

Smashing Pumpkins -Machina.The Machines Of God-

Another great piece of work of Billy Corgan where he approaches more than ever to the dark sounds and the style of the first albums is left apart. The guitars are now more melodic and less distorted but their personal strength remains.

The Smiths

In 1983 a quartet leaded by a young Johnny Marr at the guitars and a singer named Morrisey appears in the charts. From that moment the britsh rock won´t be the same; The Smiths will give during their career multiple little songs full of feelings, irony, and sarcasm against our double moral society. Real slaps in the face to the applauded british educative system and to the politic class, stories of frustrated love and ambiguous sexuality compose their discography.

The Sound -Thunder Up-

Last work, edited in 1987, of this british band leaded by Adrian Borland , who died in 1999. Asociated by the critics to the early U2, Echo&The Bunnymen or even The Chameleons, The Sound built great rock melodies which will unjust always be in the shadows of the anonymity due to the blindness of record labels. The sweet delicate sound of Barria Alta is one of the highlights (it is to The Sound what View From a Hill is to The Chameleons),or the intensive feelings of You´ve Got a Way or the rythm of Kinetic. Fortunately their discography is being re-edited; you can order their albums via Red Sun Records.

The Stone Roses *

Sounds belonging to the 60´s properly updated with the 80´s tendencies. The result: crystal, smart and fresh pop, as only the British people can do it. With The Beatles as starting point and Oasis as the last link -to date-, this brit-pop sound will never leave us. It´s a shame they suffered from messiahnic dreams ( they ended believing themselves their "I want to be adore" and "I am the resurrection") fading out short after that, sinking in their own egos.

Swans -The Burning World-

Swans was a band in which the only rule was the experimentation. Leaded by the vocalist Michael Gira, with a low, low voice their compositions always smelt of desperation. With a style hard to clasify , Swans started their career experimenting with noise and dissonances adding insane and obsesive iterative rythms. But in 1989 their evolution leaded them to MCA and to show the pop according to M.Gira. The chaos is replaced by acoustic guitars and more conventional rythms in The Burning World, where some ambient pieces are sung by the sensual voice of Jarboe in counterpoint with the rest of the songs where Gira tells us stories of the dark side of the human being.

Tangerine Dream -Phaedra-

In the far 1974 the german group Tangerine Dream publishes in Virgin what will be their most important international release after some years experimenting with the electronic music. The german trio leaded by Edgar Froese establishes the postulates of a movement based on the electronic experimentation to draw futuristic landscapes of sound. Long instrumental pieces to transport our minds out of this world.

Talk Talk -The Colour Of Spring-

Perhaps the best work of this british trio who started with the tecno-pop of the early 80´s but who then evolved towards more intimate melodies using classic instruments like sax, harp or harmonica. In this work we can enjoy splendid melodies where the personal and nasal voice of Mark Hollis opens up our eyes to beatiful landscapes. This work includes one their most succesful song: Living In Another World.

The The -Mind Bomb-

In 1989 Matt Johnson edits, with his alter ego The The, perhaps his best work. Helped, among others, by Johnny Marr in the guitars, Matt Jonhson sings us stories about the contradictions of the religions, about sad love and alcohol. Lyrically is a great evolution in the career of Matt Johnson; an album not yet surpassed.

Tom Waits -Alice-

It is edited ten years after, in 2002, the songs Tom Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan created for a play of Paul Schmidt, called Alice. Acoustic songs with jazzy elements which evoke us night atmospheres in downtown bars, where drunken loosers would tell stories of lost love and helpless suicides to a half empty bottle of whisky. Tom Waits is one of the rare artists who can presume of being beyond the policies of music business without surrendering, and having an extense back catalogue of master pieces.

Ultravox -Vienna-

1980 sees the resurrection of a pioneer band in the punk movement. This time, Ultravox without John Foxx change their style and enter the world which was discovered some years ago by bands like Kraftwerk. The guitars are left and synthesizers take place to lead the band to their highest point of fame and success. Vienna will be their SONG in capital letters of this band which, after the desertions of Warren Cann and Midge Ure have continued with different members but non of them have been able to surpass the talent of the quartet Ure-Cross-Cann-Currie.

U2 -The Unforgettable Fire-

Fouth studio album of the biggest irish band edited in 1985 and where they choose to leave the strong sound of early albums and dive in the ambient worlds of Brian Eno, taking him as producer. This union will surprise everybody giving birth to a new sound of U2. It is here where The Edge uses for the first time the effect of the infinity guitar, a gadget invented by Michael Brook, wich will be during some years the personal sound of U2.
